“Sometimes – the best way to get a message across is in a story. I don’t need to tell you the names of the people in this one, or even what relationship they are to each other. What is important is the feeling behind the story – that reaching out to people does make a positive difference.
The people in this story had a terrible verbal argument that almost extended into physical altercation and the one person in the story whose identity I will reveal – myself – felt so apologetic about the incident that I sent greeting cards to everyone who witnessed the argument to say ‘sorry’. I had been going under a lot of stress at the time due to work related situations & personal family matters; there was a building up of tension within me and uncharacteristically I literally blew up in anger and lost my temper. I was in the wrong!
For the main person who was directly involved in this argument, my ‘sorry’ wasn’t enough. Still…despite the clear rejection – that he never wanted to see me again – I persevered, sending birthday cards and Christmas cards in the years that followed.
Each one held just a simple message – that I wished them best wishes for the occasion and I was thinking of them.
Last Christmas, a family wedding brought us together and I was able to apologise again – this time in person – and we shook hands and shared a hug. It was such a great relief.
I sent him one more birthday card – just a few months ago – and it was only a few weeks after that when I received the call from his distraught partner to say that he had died of a massive heart attack.
In another phone call later – around the time of his funeral – his partner told me how much he had loved the most recent birthday card I had taken the time to create and send to send him.
There are so many stories like this – just waiting to be told. But first, they must be experienced.
